All optometrists are doctors.  They are doctors of optometry designated as O.D.   To become an optometrist, one must complete a four your college degree to get a Bachelor's degree and then complete an additional four years of college to get their degree.  In addition, in order to get licensed, they need to pass National Boards in addition to North Carolina State Board Exams to receive their license.  In addition, they must attend continuing education to keep their licenses active in the state.  The profession in recent years is dominated by females which is quite different from what was happening 20 years ago.

Optometry Info In Our State

Currently there are around 950 optometrists that are licensed in the state.  Not all of these doctors are actively practicing, as many ODs have a license in more than one state.  Of course most practices are in the larger towns but one of the nice things about this profession is that there are many ODs that love being in smaller towns.
